ERECTED IN LOVING MEMORY OF THE
REV. GEORGE GRENFELL F.R.G.S.
GOLD MEDALIST OF THE ROYAL GEOGRAPHICAL SOCIETY. PIONEER MISSIONARY IN THE CONGO. HE WAS BAPTISED IN THIS CHURCH BY THE REV. SAMUEL CHAPMAN IN OCTOBER 1864. TEACHER IN THESE SUNDAY SCHOOLS FOR 8 YEARS. WENT TO BRISTOL COLLEGE FROM THIS CHURCH IN 1873, AND WAS SENT BY THE BAPTIST MISSIONARY SOCIETY AS A MISSIONARY TO THE WEST COAST OF AFRICA ON 19TH DECEMBER 1874. DIED AT BASOKO, UPPER CONGO RIVER, ON 1ST JULY 1906. HE WAS IN THE FIRST RANK AS AN EXPLORER, EMINENT AS A MISSIONARY, HUMBLE AND DEVOUT IN SPIRIT AND WHOLEHEARTED IN THE SERVICE OF HIS MASTER. BELOVED BY ALL HIS COMRADES AND VENERATED BY THE NATIVES OF THE CONGO AND FOR WHOM HE LIVED AND DIED
